Oil spill across 1/5th of remote wildlife refuge, Associated Press, April 7, 2010:

A crude oil spill covers about one-fifth of a remote national wildlife refuge near the mouth of the Mississippi River, and another 120 square miles in the Gulf of Mexico.

Coast Guard Lt. Stephen Nutting says the slick covered 16 square miles of the 76-square-mile Delta National Wildlife Refuge on Wednesday, and a 12-mile-wide slick stretched 10 miles into the gulf. ...

[M]ore than 50 people and 16 vessels were working to clean the spill and protect the environment. ...

About 18,000 gallons of oil leaked from the line before Cypress Pipe Line Co., a joint venture between British Petroleum and Chevron Pipe Line Co., could shut it off.

Coast Guard Containing Oil Spill in Wildlife Refuge, Bloomberg, April 7, 2010:

18,000 gallons of oil spilled from a 10-inch line in the Delta National Wildlife Refuge, the Coast Guard said today. ...

An area of approximately 160 square miles has been affected, the Coast Guard said. The cause is under investigation.

Cleanup Continues After Chevron Pipeline Spills Oil In Louisiana, Wall Street Journal, April 7, 2010:

U.S. Coast Guard and state officials continued an intensive cleanup activity Wednesday after an oil pipeline... spilled Tuesday 18,000 gallons of oil into the Delta National Wildlife Refuge in Louisiana... [over] 40 square miles of marsh and 120 square miles of offshore waters, the Coast Guard said in a press release.

Personnel are working on recovering the oil and trying to keep wildlife out of the impacted area, the Coast Guard said. ...

About 5,000 feet of a containment boom have been deployed to enclose the oil and workers plan to deploy an additional 2,000 feet of the boom around the environmentally sensitive area near Breton Island, the Coast Guard said.
