BP may rename gas stations as “backlash in America shows no sign of easing”; Some see 40% drop in sales


US petrol stations to consider banishing BP from the pumps, Telegraph (UK), August 1, 2010:

[T]he 475 distributors who control the bulk of BP's petrol stations in America, fear that sticking with the BP brand may continue to hurt their sales. ...

John Kleine, executive director of the BP Amoco Marketers Association, which represents the US distributors, told The Sunday Telegraph that the subject is raised in the course of nearly every conversation he has with members.

Embattled oil giant BP is reportedly facing pressure to re-name its US petrol stations under their old Amoco brand as the backlash in America shows no sign of easing, Mirror (UK), August 1, 2010:

The distributors who control most of BP's US forecourts are pushing the group to revert back to the traditional American Amoco branding for fear of further sales pain following the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, according to The Sunday Telegraph. ...

They are reportedly seeing sales fall by up to 40% in the worst hit sites as Americans shun the BP brand.
