“Significant amounts of oil is floating ashore in the Florida Keys”

Sis you NOT proofread this? It should either be " significanr amounts of oil ARE floating ashore in the Florida Keys" OR " Signicant amount of oil is floating ashore in the Florida Keys".

I don't mean to sound nit-picky, but a lot of people will not take an article seriously when there are obvious grammatical errors like that.
