Where has all the oil gone? Even more updates on the BP spill from USF’s Marine Science department, Creative Loafing,
December 15, 2010:
Dr. David Hollander... explained that every water sample taken from the Gulf that was shown to contain oil on the radar looked like clear water (and from the water samples shown on the slides, this was the case). But what was further explained is that because the pressure was so high from the broken pipeline, the oil sprayed out like a can of hairspray, spewing very fine particles of oil. When Dr. Hollander filtered the clear water, he showed images of yellowish brown filters; these filters were full of those tiny particles of oil. It was proven by studies (that Dr. Hollander and his crew performed) that there are alkalies and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the oil, which means that it is toxic and mutagenic (capable of inducing mutation).
