Dr. IAN MACDONALD, Professor of Oceanography, Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science, Florida State University: The reason we have oil is that it's a material that very stubbornly resists breakdown. Most of the oil we use is millions of years old. It's not a compound that breaks down easily.
