Experts advise how to deal with tar found on Treasure Coast beaches, Stuart News, July 14, 2010:
Lumps of crude have been found in the past couple of weeks across Hutchinson Island, Cocoa Beach, Cape Canaveral, Ormond Beach and St. Augustine Beach.
Benjamin Dyall, while kayaking Saturday off Tiger Shores Beach, north of Stuart Beach, notice more than a half dozen tar balls just below surface.
“Three weeks ago, the water was crystal clear — like the Bahamas — as clear as we had seen it in years,” Dyall said. “There was still an abundance of bait fish, as well as predators such as Spanish mackerel and Tarpon, as well as sea turtles. The tar balls were sporadic, yet clearly apparent.”
Dyall didn’t gather the tar for fear of damaging his wetsuit, gloves, kayaks, and other gear, but wanted others to be aware it was in the water.
