15 dead sharks wash ashore in Manatee County, Bay News 9, April 22, 2011:
A mystery is brewing on Manatee County's beautiful beaches [...] Recently more than a dozen dead sharks were found on the north ends of Longboat Key and Anna Maria Island.
"There were no real indicators of what went wrong with them," Dr. Nick Whitney, Staff Scientist for the Center for Shark Research at MOTE Marine Laboratory said. "There are no obvious signs of damage from fishing or net damage or anything like that." [...]
"Oil spill is pretty unlikely because these animals tend to be coastal," said Whitney. "They move up and down coast, but they wouldn't tend to go off shore and in deep water where oil is." [...]
MOTE researchers say finding a dead shark now and then is not rare, but it is uncommon to find a group of them dead within a few days.

That's a mystery alright. Whatever could it be?
Yes, because there is NO OIL near the shore, remember??? Ugh.
Earthquake !!!!! coming
NO mystery here at all. I work on toxic compounds and they become more concentrated the higher up the food chain you go. Sharks are at the top of the food chain of the gulf (coastal or otherwise), so the fact that they move around means nothing other than that they are eating all the poisoned fish that have been eating poisoned organisms from the ocean floor. No mystery at all.
Very Good, DR INSULA …
I bet that took you all of a half-second to process. These Clowns ( half-whits pretending to be scientists) need to be arrested for collaborating to minimize BP damages. They are putting the community in Danger By Lying to the Public about they Health Risks.
Top of the food chain in the sea, they has been eating all the smaller fish !
Maybe they just starved like whales have been reported die of !
yeah they tell us everything but the truth...xdrfox,what's next man WE are ultimately the top of the food chain...I guess tuna slides down more easily with lubrication huh..."would you like light or heavy crude with that sandwich, and sir the shrimp is very slippery today"..
Not eating fish, since last May, unless in cans pre 420 !
I haven't eaten fish, shrimp, oysters (sigh) either since the spill and with all the corexit. Lots of people here in the panhandle think that this is extreme because they are sure everything is safe. I just can't believe that.

Maybe there washing ashore for the same reason were smelling crude oil almost everyday. Also a chemical sweet odor now and then in between Sarasota and Tampa bay.
I use to love the gulf shrimp. No more, i haven't eaten any since the oil and corexit.
"Because the sharks wouldn't tend to go offshore???" Oh yes! Oil is only offshore and wouldn't tend to go onshore. How can these people be so blind??
Weird. Did any studies figure out how they washed ashore? If it wasn't the oil, I wonder what else is in the water causing the deaths.
No mystery here - I am touching nothing out of the ocean until this mess gets sorted out.
I’ll definitely endorse your articles, itz easy to read, to understand and to follow. This is an interesting piece of write up and appreciate the effort.
