Oil disaster’s health effects “will be felt for GENERATIONS” warns scientist (VIDEOS)

BP oil spill’s health effects will be felt for generations, scientist warns, The Times-Picayune, February 05, 2011:

… [Wilma Subra, a New Iberia biochemist] said Saturday at a forum in New Orleans… the human health effects of the spill are greater — and will linger far longer — than either the oil industry or the U.S. government has acknowledged.

“The effects will be felt for generations,” she said, ticking off a wide range of symptoms she said result from exposure to crude oil and Corexit. “This is what we have to look forward to.” …

Immediate symptoms include skin irritation, nausea, headaches and vomiting. Longer-term maladies can include liver and kidney damage, cardiac arrhythmia and chronic respiratory problems. Benzene also is a cancer-causing agent. …

Several area residents who attended the forum echoed another of Subra’s concerns: Many physicians along the Gulf Coast are reluctant to link their patients’ problems to the oil spill or don’t have the expertise in environmental medicine to make the connection.

The biggest health problems are caused by reports like this, which scare the living daylights out of people with little or no justification to back it up.

In other major spills, health issues have never been a problem, so what makes this one so different? Don’t repeat that untrue story that all the Exxon Valdez responders are dead. My team, the first to arrive in the State of Alaska are all alive and very well. At the Braer spill, where winds of over 100 miles per hour blew oil spray inland, minor short term respiratory effects were noted, but no long term effects.

So lets stop these scare stories.
