Protest at BP operations center — Up to 500 people to camp out for days starting Wednesday

Tent protest to target BP in Schriever, Houma Today, March 14, 2011

A coalition of civil-rights leaders, ministers and business owners say they plan to camp in front of BP’s operations center on La. 311 starting Wednesday.

The Rev. Vincent Fusilier, pastor of New St. Matthew’s Baptist Church in Houma, said he and national leaders of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference will be calling for a boycott of BP products.

The intention is to call attention to what they say is the company’s failure to adequately pay people hurt by last year’s Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

As many as 500 protesters, he said, plan to gather near the site on La. 311 near U.S. 90 Wednesday night and remain there through Friday. High on the agenda will be an expression of dissatisfaction with BP claims chief Ken Feinberg, organizers aid.

“We’ve got poor folks on the bayous, shrimpers, fishermen. All these folks are Christian folks, and we have to step up to the plate with these people,” Fusilier said. “Feinberg has been a compulsive liar.”
