Yerkes said he started getting these recurring sores near his elbows, where he rests his arms on the balcony railing while chatting on the phone, shortly after witnessing a plane dumping liquid into the Gulf from his balcony.

The Alabama physician treating him linked it to the high levels of volatile solvents found in his blood that are chemicals present in BP crude oil.
