Samples taken 100 miles offshore Tampa for baseline tests

USF: Underwater oil came from BP well, WTSP Tampa Bay, July 23, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. EDT:

[O]il was found suspended at depths of 400 meters and 1,000 to 1,400 meters beneath the Gulf's surface...

The 400-meter layer was approximately 30 meters (100 feet) thick, and was observed 45 nautical miles north-northeast of the Deepwater Horizon site.

The layer at 1,000 to 1,400 meters was observed approximately 24 nautical miles east of the Deepwater Horizon site. ...

The article added that scientists have gathered "baseline water quality and food web samples" from waters "north of Tampa and west about 100 miles off the coast."
