White House officials: Explosives to stop well may cause “uncontrolled situation”; Oil may already be escaping into “rock formations below the sea floor”

No nukes in the gulf: White House officials, Yahoo News Canada, June 3, 2010:

Carol Browner, Obama's energy and climate change czar, said... "You could end up with an uncontrolled situation _ rather than just having one point of leakage, which is this well, you could end up with a lot of places leaking. This is obviously a very difficult situation, but we wouldn't want to make it more difficult." ...

"Seafloor nuclear detonation is starting to sound surprisingly feasible and appropriate," Michael E. Webber, a mechanical engineer at the University of Texas in Austin, said last month. ...

But [Admiral Thad] Allen, the Obama administration's point man in the gulf, was dismissive...  "[T]here actually could be something wrong with the well casing, and there could be open communication in the strata or the rock formations below the sea floor," Allen said. "I don't think we want to take a chance of somehow disturbing that where the oil would have direct access to the sea floor. To my mind that would be a pretty serious risk." ...

Oil engineers have also pointed out that using explosives could damage the wellhead to such an extent that the flow could never be corked from the top if the detonation failed to seal the well.

A parallel bore to the well to set a nuke a thousand feet below the casing damage would be ten thousand feet above the relief well entry, and would not hurt that effort, and an additional mile from the oil pool and cannot open it to the sea floor. For god's sake nuke it.
