REDiPlan is an emergency plan created by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The program is designed to help families, businesses, and individuals prepare for and respond to disasters and emergencies.

You can even use the checklist provided here to develop an emergency plan and build your own survival kit. You can also download the Get Prepared app to access all of its emergency tools.

  1. Get insured by taking out insurance
Make sure your insurance policy covers all your valuable assets. This includes your home, valuable materials, cars, and, most importantly, you and your family. Your insurance policy should also cover natural disasters.
  2. Familiarize yourself with disaster warning systems
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology and the Standard Emergency Warning Signals (SEWS) are valuable resources and methods for obtaining information about potential environmental hazards. Listen to the SEWS siren broadcast on radio and national television stations, or visit the Bureau of Meteorology’s website for the latest information on climate conditions.
  3. Understand your numbers
911 is a number that most people should be able to recall off the top of their heads. If you or a loved one is in a life-threatening situation, don’t hesitate to call 911.
  4. Prepare yourself emotionally
This is extremely important as it allows you to maintain control and properly execute contingency plans. It also helps to reduce psychological distress and long-term mental health issues that can result from trauma.

What to do after a natural disaster

Living through a life-threatening event is a traumatic experience that should not be ignored. Fear, anxiety, and even trauma can lead to mental illnesses such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), survivor’s guilt, and others.

Natural disasters are traumatic events that occur regardless of human actions. Although various disaster response systems are being developed around the world, no technological advancements can prevent natural disasters. The best we can do is prepare for them and reduce the number of victims and fatalities as much as possible.

Here we have described natural disasters, particularly in the United States. We have also mentioned emergency and rescue protocols to help you cope with such unwelcome events. There is one important thing to keep in mind when it comes to natural disasters: you must be prepared. Although natural disasters are unpredictable, they happen every year in the United States. You need to be aware of these hazards and their consequences so that you can be prepared when an emergency occurs.
